Windows 11 October 2026 Update: New Features, Known Bugs and Fixes
From version 26H2 to KB5127648: what's new in Windows 11, which bugs have been reported, and how to work around them.

Microsoft shipped two important Windows 11 updates in the past few weeks: the annual Windows 11 2026 Update (version 26H2), which reached general availability on September 29, 2026, and the October 2026 Patch Tuesday cumulative update, KB5127648, released on October 13. Here is what each one actually adds, which bugs have been reported, and how to work around them.
Version 26H2: a light "enablement" feature update
Version 26H2 is not a full OS reinstall. Microsoft delivers it as a small enablement package for PCs already on version 24H2 or 25H2: a quick download and a single restart. Because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same servicing branch, most of the new code is already on your PC through monthly updates; 26H2 switches those features on and resets the support clock. According to Windows Central, Home and Pro editions get 24 months of support from release, and Enterprise/Education editions get 36 months.
Highlights Microsoft lists for 26H2 include:
- Built-in Sysmon and post-quantum cryptography APIs for IT and security teams.
- Windows settings backup, which keeps supported settings and the Microsoft Store app list for recovery or a new device (now on by default for commercial customers).
- App-specific taskbar actions and File Explorer navigation improvements.
- Point-in-time restore, Autopilot device association, improved Search, and better Bluetooth/USB reliability.
- Fewer restarts: Windows Update now tries to install eligible updates together with the monthly security update.
- WMIC removed: the old Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line tool is no longer available as a Feature on Demand.
To get it sooner, go to Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available.
KB5127648: what the October Patch Tuesday adds
KB5127648 applies to versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 (builds 26100.9711, 26200.9711 and 26300.9711) and installs automatically. It is the first cumulative update for 26H2 and, importantly, the last update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro, which have now reached end of updates. If you are still on 24H2 Home or Pro, upgrade to 26H2.
New features and changes (rolling out gradually), as tested by Windows Latest and PCWorld:
- File Explorer previews are back for files downloaded from the internet, such as PDFs. HTML files get a new "Preview anyway" button. The Home tab also remembers whether you collapsed sections like Recent or Favorites.
- Remappable Copilot key: by default you can map it to Right Ctrl, the Context Menu key, or Windows Search; with PowerToys you can map it to almost anything.
- Open apps maximized: a new accessibility setting.
- Bluetooth: a long list of fixes for audio, microphones, LE Audio and the Settings page.
- Emoji 17.0, including distorted face, fight cloud and hairy creature.
- Touchpad single-finger scrolling and automatic scrolling.
- A Tips widget, OneDrive camera roll backup from Settings, a refreshed Magnifier toolbar, and DIB image support for desktop backgrounds.
- PC-to-PC Migration has been removed; Microsoft now points users to Windows Backup.
Fixes listed in Microsoft's release notes include:
- A black screen caused by Explorer.exe failing or crashing at sign-in in multi-user environments such as Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogix.
- AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio playback problems in some apps, which Neowin reports caused some media players and games to crash.
- Always On VPN connections getting stuck in "Connecting".
- Printing failures with RAW or Generic Text Only drivers after the August update, mouse stutter in some games, and Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in failing after a cold boot.
- File History backup bugs from the September update (according to Windows Latest).
One security change deserves attention: when the BlockNtlmv1SSO registry value is not set and Credential Guard is off, Windows now enforces blocking NTLMv1-derived credentials for single sign-on. This may affect Wi-Fi, Ethernet and VPN connections that use MS-CHAPv2 authentication (see KB5066470).
Known issues and workarounds
Microsoft's official page lists three known issues:
1. Smart App Control can't be turned on
If Smart App Control was previously turned off, the option may be grayed out after the update. PCs where it is already on are unaffected. Workaround: in an administrator Command Prompt run the two commands below, then restart (back up the registry first):
reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides" /v 2883193997 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides" /v 2850574478 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Organizations can use the two special Group Policies Microsoft published instead.
2. Remote Desktop fails with error 0xC000000D
Starting with the September preview update KB5124010, non-admin users may be unable to connect via Remote Desktop to hosts with Administrator protection enabled, with the message "The token that was passed to the function is invalid." This mainly affects enterprise devices; Microsoft security baselines turn Administrator protection on by default. Temporary workaround: turn off Administrator protection via Intune or Group Policy. A permanent fix is promised.
3. USB Audio Class 1.0 devices with no sound
After the September 8 security update, some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices show "Code 10" in Device Manager or produce no sound. The September 14 out-of-band update (KB5129195) fixed the 8-channel/3D audio cases, and some users restored sound by switching to 2-channel mode. Microsoft's page still describes the issue as only partially resolved, although Neowin reported the remaining bugs were fixed in this update.
A 26H2 issue that has already been fixed
At launch, some machines protected by Credential Guard lost their trust relationship with an on-premises Active Directory domain because 26H2 enabled Machine Identity Isolation enforcement. Microsoft resolved this with the September 22 update (KB5124010) by disabling that enforcement entirely for now.
Should you install it?
For most home users, yes. KB5127648 includes the month's security fixes and fixes several annoying bugs, especially Bluetooth and File Explorer previews. If you use Remote Desktop in a company, have an older USB audio device, or rely on MS-CHAPv2 VPN connections, check with IT first. If you are on 24H2 Home or Pro, moving to 26H2 is no longer optional if you want security updates.
