Replit Makes OpenAI Its Default Over Anthropic
Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt that the AI coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic. He later clarified that OpenAI is now Replit's preferred partner for powering Replit Agent and that ChatGPT has become the default model. Users can still choose Anthropic's Claude models themselves. Masad said the decision came down to cost, partnership and performance. "I think ChatGPT is better now," he said, adding that OpenAI's Sol and Astra models consistently perform better at building apps from scratch on Replit's internal and public benchmarks. Replit announced its OpenAI partnership in August and, until recently, was one of Anthropic's top five customers. The change sounds small but could matter financially. TechCrunch notes that most customers stick with the default model, so Replit's spending with Anthropic could drop significantly. However, people familiar with the Anthropic-Replit relationship disputed Masad's comments, and one said the partnership is still in place. Masad also shared growth figures. Enterprise contracts went from about 2% of Replit's revenue last year to about 15% this year, and more than half of revenue now comes from business customers. He expects enterprise and government customers to account for more than half of revenue in 2027.
